Bellaire, Mich. – Bellaire Public Schools was named a 2018 Academic State Champ school district by Bridge Magazine on Tuesday, February 13. Of the 30 school districts recognized statewide, Bellaire was named as Top 10 in the category for small schools.
Bridge Magazine’s 2018 Academic State Champs honors schools for student progress in grades 3 through 8 based on data gathered through a Stanford University analysis of 500 public schools in Michigan. The research was part of a national study of millions of students that measured academic performance and socioeconomic data such as income, family structure and family education.
Bellaire Public Schools Superintendent Jim Emery notes that he and other school leaders and staff are accustomed to studying student outcomes on state assessments such as M-STEP (formerly MEAP) to identify what percentage of students in each grade level meet the state’s definition of proficiency. “The Academic State Champ’s looks at growth from a very different perspective… the use of the Stanford University study data takes into account student socioeconomic information which is a more complex way of measuring student achievement.”
