The landing of the eagle PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brittany Parliament & Emily Cybulla

On a January afternoon, a small, awe-struck crowd of onlookers gathered in the courtyard and the frames of the windows were filled with the faces of curious students as a magnificent eagle statue was pulled through the winter sky by a crane and lowered to its permanent home outside the doors of the Bellaire Middle/High School. The Bellaire EagleExpertly crafted by sculptor John Goss, this ten-foot tall monument was funded by the graduating classes of 2005 through 2009, the Bellaire Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization, the Bellaire Education Association, the Bellaire Middle School Student Senate, and the Shanty Creek Association. Work on the sculpture began in August, but the snow would fly before the eagle would make its landing. “It’s exciting that it has come to a completion, that it is finally done,” rejoiced Bellaire High School staff member Mary Manville, who also worked closely with Goss on the project.

Well worth the wait, the eagle is much more than a statue. It is a symbol of Bellaire’s school pride and soaring spirit. Containing material from the old school building’s roof, it is also a grand commemoration to the new and improved learning facility it guards. For years to come, the eagle will remain perched outside the school, greeting students that pass under its shadow. Its majestic presence will serve as a reminder to them: a reminder to be the best they can be, to learn to their full potential, and to spread their wings and fly.
